Brighton Beach
Brighton, also known as Little Odessa, is a neighborhood in Brooklyn just a few minutes walk from Coney Island.
Brighton Beach is a bustling sea-side neighborhood with shoppers and commuters at every corner and crosswalk. Above Brighton Beach Ave, the neighborhood’s central street, hovers a train railway. So on top of all the activity, a deafening train rumbles by every so often.
During the 1970’s many soviet immigrants began to settle in Brighton Beach which was experiencing an economic downturn. A large portion of the first wave of Soviet immigrants were Ashkenazi Jews. But during the decline and after the collapse of the USSR, immigrants flooded Brighton, bringing their language with them.
